Handbook of Thanatology

Handbook of Thanatology, 2nd EditionThe Handbook of Thanatology is a comprehensive resource covering the fundamental and foundational knowledge in thanatology, compiled by some of ADEC's most well-respected and knowledgeable members. Its contents are based on the body of knowledge matrix, created initially by ADEC's Credentialing Council, Body of Knowledge Committee, and Test Committee.

There have been significant advances in the bridging of the research-practice gap since the first edition of the Handbook of Thanatology (2007). Such change raises new and important questions, and also brings a number of controversies and differences of opinion. This reality is especially true for a field like thanatology, because the practitioners come from varied fields and points of view.

Examples of questions that have surfaced since the first edition are:

  • Should grief be included in the DSM-5?
  • How does technology, particularly the Internet, affect programs of death education and grief counseling?
  • What does research tell us about the efficacy of different approaches to treatment of trauma?
These and many other questions are addressed in the 2nd edition of The Handbook of Thanatology (published by the Association for Death Education and Counseling®, David K. Meagher, and David E. Balk, editors, 2013). It is an important resource for those individuals who care for the dying or who engage in death education, grief counseling, and related research to these practices.
