Student Paper Awards
The Association for Death Education and Counseling invites the submission of student papers to be considered for one of three awards:
- The undergraduate student paper award established in memory of Mary E. Brown, a former Canadian member of the Association and educator.
- The graduate paper award, established in memory of Richard Kalish.
- An award that encourages graduate and undergraduate students to submit papers dealing with cross-cultural and individual differences in dying and death.
In order to submit a paper for consideration, the writer must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student. Each award consists of $100 and a Certificate of Recognition, which will be awarded at the 2007 Annual Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. Winners will be reimbursed for their travel expenses up to $200 and their conference registration fee will be waived. Winners are also invited to submit abstracts of their papers to The Forum Newsletter and to present winning papers as poster presentations during the Conference.
Student papers that reflect diversity of culture as well as philosophical, clinical and educational approaches to death, dying and bereavement are especially welcomed.
A multi-disciplinary committee will judge papers through a blind review process. Reviews will be based on the following criteria: the topic is related to death, dying, or bereavement; topic importance; clarity of writing; originality of content; depth and breadth of content; documentation of resources; writing style; and adherence to format.
To submit a paper, please follow the guidelines below:
- The format of the paper should follow American Psychological Association style.
- The paper should be no more than 20 pages, double-spaced, including references and an abstract.
- The title of the paper, graduate or undergraduate designation, name of student, name of school, and the name of the course and faculty will appear on the title page only. The writer’s name should not appear on any page other than this title page and the biographical information page.
- On a separate page, please provide the following: a) name, b) address, c) telephone number, d) e-mail address, e) school attending, program of study, f) the specific paper award you are applying for (e.g., graduate, undergraduate or cross-cultural), and g) a brief paragraph with biographical information (e.g., field, major interest, awards or honors, whether you are a current ADEC member, and other pertinent biographical information).
- Include a self-addressed, stamped postcard so that you can be informed when your application materials have arrived.

- The deadline for the submission of papers is November 15, 2006 .
