Apply for Student Initiative Conference Scholarships

ADEC’s Student Initiative Committee is seeking applications for the Student Initiative Conference Scholarships for the 2007 Annual Conference in April 11-15, 2007 Indianapolis, Ind.

The recipients of the award will receive complimentary registration for the 2007 ADEC Annual Conference (contingent upon conference attendance) and a one-year student membership in ADEC (for new members only).

Applications will be reviewed by a committee of non-student members. Applications must be postmarked on or before December 15, 2006. No exceptions.

To apply, submit three copies of the following materials:

Applications must include:

  1. Cover letter
    1. Name, address, telephone number and e-mail address. 
    2. Institution attending, program of study
    3. Student status (part- or full-time, level of study -- undergraduate or graduate and year in the program). If you are a part-time student, briefly describe your need for financial assistance with conference registration costs. 
    4. Anticipated graduation date. 
    5. Whether you have submitted a paper for any student paper competitions. 
    6. Letter of recommendation from a professor familiar with your interest and/or work in the area of thanatology.
  2. List of honors and activities
    1. One page list of honors, awards, extracurricular and volunteer activities.
  3. An essay
    1. FIRST TIME APPLICANTS: 
      The essay should be one to three pages describing:
      1. Your interests and experiences within the field of thanatology. 
      2. Any ADEC involvement (if applicable).
      3. How ADEC involvement will facilitate your goals.
    2. APPLICANTS PREVIOUSLY AWARDED A CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIP:
      The essay should be one to three pages describing:
      1. Year(s) during which you have received a SIC conference scholarship.
      2. Your interests and experiences within the field of thanatology.
      3. Length of ADEC membership and types of involvement in SIC activities or other roles within ADEC (active involvement required to receive multiple conference scholarships).
      4. Description of how continued involvement in ADEC will facilitate your goals and your future plans for active involvement within ADEC and in what capacity do you plan to be involved.

Restrictions: Only one ADEC award will be given to offset conference expenses. Should a candidate receive a student paper award, the SIC scholarship will be given to an alternate. PRIOR SIC SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ARE ELIGIBLE; however, priority for repeat awards will be given to those who are actively involved in the activities of the SIC.
