Integrating Research with Practice in the Study of Dying, Death and Bereavement Grant
Application and Criteria for Review
Amount of Award: One-time award of $5.000
Purpose:
The purpose of the grant is to support research in thanatology designed with direct implications for carryover and transfer to clinical practice that improves the well-being of the dying and the bereaved.
Eligibility and Requirements for the Award, Submission of Details and Deadline:
The applicant must qualify as:
- A student currently in an accredited college program.
- A clinician who has been active in the field of Thanatology a minimum of three years.
- A member of a health care profession with state licensure or certification in the Death Education field such as ADEC (Certification in Thanatology).
Ethical Considerations: Research must meet all requirements of research participants established by American Psychological Association. Approval must be received from an official institutional review board prior to the initiation of research.
Submission Data: The study must be submitted for review no later than midnight May 31, 20 07. Please submit the following together in one envelope to the following address:

- Dissemination of Findings: Detail your plans for submitting publications, manuscripts and/or presenting the results of your scholarship as a result of this award. Awardees are expected to present findings at an ADEC conference. Submission of the study to the ADEC Forum Editor for possible publication encouraged.
Proposal Review Procedure:
The proposals will be blind reviewed and recommendation for funding or non-funding by an ADEC appointed grant review committee made up of clinicians and academics. All committee members will receive all applications and will be asked to rank order proposals on the following scoring format and critique criteria.
1 = Not addressed by the proposal
2 = Weak presentation by the proposal
3 = Satisfactory presentation by the proposal
4 = Well presented by the proposal
5 = An outstanding presentation by this proposal
Criteria for Reviewing Proposal
- This proposal effectively explained the significance of the proposed work; shows promise of attaining goals of clearly defining tasks and techniques useful in working with the dying and/or bereaved and shows how the work will significantly advance the field by generating research driven techniques that can be replicated.
- This proposal demonstrates that the applicant has a grasp of the field and of the associated literature.
- This proposal is well written.
- The body of the proposal includes a description of the project. It includes a description of the significance of the proposed work for advancing the goal of integrating research to practice for the community at large. The proposal outlines its goals, methods, and work plan and emphasizes how findings will transfer from research to practice and how they will improve the care of the dying and the bereaved. The bibliographical references were complete. Please note: proposals are limited to 7-8 pages, with references and appendices limited to no more than 2-3 additional pages. Reviewers may refuse to read proposals that violate this request.
- This proposal outlines methods or approaches to the planned work that convinces the reviewer that the objectives of the project will be achieved.
- Is it clear that the applicant has the expertise to carry out the project?
- Applicants must describe their plans for acquiring IRB approval from all appropriate institutional review boards and submit a copy of the IRB approval form before gathering data.
