Integrating Research with Practice in the Study of Dying, Death and Bereavement Grant

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: If the deadline for submission is May 31, 2007, when will recipients (and non-winners) be notified of the award?

A: Award notifications will be made on or before September 17, 2007.

Q: If awarded, when does the research have to commence and when does it have to be completed?

A: It is expected that the research would be submitted for Institutional Review Board IRB) approval immediately upon being awarded. It is expected that the research be completed within one year of receiving IRB approval.

Q: Can multiple authors propose a project?

A: Yes. In fact, ADEC encourages educators or scientists to pair with clinicians in devising a project that can bring the results of research and theory to practice.

Q: If a more modest project is proposed that requires a budget less than $5,000, will the award perhaps be “split” between two or more such modest but deserving proposals?

A. No. The intent of the award is to generate significant effort to “bridge” between research in thanatology and clinical practice that improves the well-being of the dying and the bereaved. As such, the Grant Task Force is interested in funding a proposal most likely to meet this objective.

Q: Who is on ADEC’s Grant Task Force and who actually chooses the recipient(s)?

A: ADEC’s Grant Task Force is chaired by Nancy Hogan, RN, PhD. Task Force Members include Dennis Klass, PhD, Lula Redmond, RN, MS, and Louis Gamino, PhD, ABPP, FT. The Task Force is charged by ADEC’s Board of Directors with evaluating proposals and determining the ultimate recipient(s).

Q: Are Grant Task Force members eligible to apply for the grant?

A: No. Neither Grant Task Force members nor their immediate colleagues (i.e., their graduate students/trainees or their research/publishing partners) are eligible to apply for the award.

Q: Do I have to submit a budget?

A: Yes. Proposals should include a budget of no more than one-page (in addition to page requirements already specified, i.e., 7-8 page proposals with 2-3 pages of references and appendices). A basic budget should outline how the money will be spent, such as salary support, equipment and supplies, participant stipends, technical support, and so forth.

Q: Should “indirect costs” be included in the budget?

A: No. Indirect costs flowing to an academic department or institution hosting the researcher are not allowed. The entire amount will be conveyed only for “direct costs” such as those enumerated above. Should an applicant have questions about how this policy will be received at their respective institution, he/she is encouraged to clarify this in advance with his/her chair or supervisor.

Q: Can money be designated for expenses to travel to an ADEC Conference or another venue and/or to present the results of the research?

A: No. The award is not intended to support travel or presentation costs, only the “direct” costs of carrying out the research.

Q: If awarded, what are ADEC’s expectations of me or my research team once the project has been completed?

A: The intention of this award is to promote application of research in thanatology to improve the well-being of the dying and the bereaved. As such, it is expected that, at a minimum, the awardee(s) would:

  1. submit a brief report of the project’s outcome to ADEC’s Board of Directors;
  2. present his/her findings in a Concurrent Session at a future ADEC Conference;
  3. write and submit for publication in ADEC’s The Forum Newsletter a brief description of the project’s outcome (in cooperation with the Editor’s publication criteria and schedule); and
  4. write and submit for publication in a professional journal a final report of the project’s outcome.

Q: If I apply but am not selected, will ADEC sponsor such an award in the future or is this a “one-time” opportunity?

A: ADEC’s Board of Directors has funded this grant as a “one-time” opportunity. However, its discretion about such awards in the future may be influenced by the outcome and significance of the project funded by this initial award.

Q: If I have other questions not addressed here, where can I go for answers?

A: Any other questions can be submitted by email to Emily Boryszewski (eboryszewski@adec.org) with ADEC’s office. She will either respond directly to you or forward your question to the appropriate party who can answer it.
