Haitian Earthquake Relief

On Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, a powerful earthquake caused massive damage in Haiti, in particular the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The Red Cross estimates that 3 million people have been affected by the earthquake, and Haitian President René Préval estimates that hundreds of thousands have died.

How can you help? A number of organizations are collecting donations and providing relief and aid to Haiti in this time of crisis. The list below is by no means exhaustive, and we encourage you to contact any organization you wish to support that is not shown here. Regardless, please consider offering your support.

International Red Cross - The IRC is mobilizing resources and staff to respond to the earthquake, and is accepting donations to aid their efforts. The American Red Cross is also collecting donations via cell phone -- Text "Haiti" to the cell number 90999 to donate $10 to Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti. The charge will appear on your cell phone bill.

UNICEF - Along with UN partners, UNICEF has begun relief efforts, and is accepting donations.

Hôpital Albert Schweitzer (HAS) - HAS provides medical care and community health and development programs for more than 300,000 impoverished people in the Artibonite Valley of central Haiti. They are currently deluged with patients suffering from traumatic injuries, and your donations can help them provide care.

Doctors Without Borders - Members of Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) are already in Haiti treating the injured, and the group is collecting donations to support their work.

Partners in Health - This group dedicated to providing the global poor with preferential health care options is collecting donations to provide supplies to hospitals and health groups in Haiti. Help is urgently needed.

Catholic Relief Services - This humanitarian agency needs support to respond to the earthquake's aftermath.

Friends of the Orphans – Friends of the Orphans supports a network of nine Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for "Our Little Brothers and Sisters") homes and their outreach programs in Latin America and the Caribbean. They transform the lives of orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children by creating families for life through values of unconditional love, shared responsibility and education. One of their facilities in Haiti has collapsed and several others, including the pediatric hospital, have suffered structural damage.
