ADEC is honored to feature Kenneth J. Doka, PhD, FT  for our keynote presentation on "The Quest for Understanding How Grief Gets Complicated: Diverse Perspectives and Clinical Applications"

Dr. Doka's session will be followed by a panel discussion with diverse perspectives and clinical applications
.  Our distinguished panel leaders include Wendy Lichtenthal, PhD, FT; Tashel Bordere, PhD, CT; and Darcy Harris, PhD, FT.

  • Our workshop will begin with our Annual Mid-Year Presidential Wolfe Report, by Melanie Wright, MSW, FT, ADEC President April 2023-2024.
  • Our workshop moderator will be Jane Milman, PhD, MA.

Description

In this presentation, we explore the varied ways that clinicians, educators, and researchers in the field have tried to understand complicated variants in the grieving process. We begin by looking at the varied concepts of theorists ranging from Freud to Worden. Second, we examine the ways that the DSM-5-TR offers ways to classify forms of complicated grief including Prolonged Grief Disorder. The presentation also acknowledges the concerns within the field over such classifications. We describe culturally-informed conceptualizations of grief, such as suffocated grief, and explore  whether and how the concept of Prolonged Grief Disorder is relevant to the grief experienced in non-death losses. We also discuss clinical considerations and intervention approaches that can be applied working with complicated grief.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss historical perspectives of complicated variants in the grieving process.
  2. Identify ways in which forms of complicated grief have been classified in diagnostic taxonomies.
  3. Describe intervention approaches that can be applied in working with complicated grief.
