Recertification - CT and FT

CT and FT Recertification Timeline 

If your certification expiration date is December 31, 2024, you must recertify between September 12 and December 31, 2024. The link to access the application is located at the bottom of this page. 


  • Once awarded the CT or FT certification and credential, it is valid for three years.
  • To continue using the designation of CT or FT, you must recertify every third year.
  • You are responsible to know the date your credential expires.
  • ADEC endeavors to send courtesy reminders, but cannot be responsible if you do not receive them due to unreported email address changes or your spam filters.
  • You are responsible to update your contact information in your ADEC Member Profile anytime it changes (especially your email or phone). 
  • Not receiving a recertification reminder is not an acceptable reason for missing the recertification deadline.


Recertification Requirements for Both CTs and FTs.

  • Recertification Activities fall under 4 possible categories (see below)
  • You must complete 45 contact hours of Recertification Activities prior to your expiration date
  • You must have a minimum of 15 contact hours under Category 1: Receiving Education
  • You do not need contact hours in all 4 categories; some applicants have all 45 hours in Category 1
  • Recertification Activities must be specific to thanatology, or can be applied to your thanatology role


Categories and Definitions of Thanatology Related Activities

2. Providing Thanatology Education

Providing education, including skills and knowledge, that will aid in the development of competency in the field of dying, death and bereavement.

1 Contact hour = 1 hour of teaching

  • Teaching academic courses
  • Leading workshops and webinars
  • Providing education in the community
  • Presenting a TED talk
  • Producing a YouTube video
  • Conducting a podcast


No Minimum requirement

Maximum 30 hours

3. Contributing to the Field of Thanatology

Contributing to the advancement of the field of Thanatology through various activities including writing, publishing, and leadership.

1 Contact hour = 1 hour of time spent on the activity

  • Completing a thesis or dissertation
  • Providing clinical supervision
  • Creating and developing instructional materials(videos, films, documentaries, training manuals)
  • Being primary administrator of a Thanatology program or center
  • Receiving a grant in the field of Thanatology
  • Publishing an article in a professional journal
  • Writing a chapter in a published book
  • Publishing a textbook
  • Publishing a book for professionals (using a publisher or self-published)
  • Publishing a book for the public (using a publisher or self-published)


No Minimum requirement

Maximum 30 hours

4. Volunteering in a Thanatology Role

Unpaid hours of volunteer service to the Thanatology community in a variety of settings

This category demonstrates dedication of service to the field of thanatology above and beyond financial compensation.

1 Contact hour = 1 hour of volunteer time

  • Membership on a board of directors or leadership council for a Thanatology non-profit
  • Serving on a committee or task force for a Thanatology non-profit
  • Volunteering for a hospice
  • Crisis response team volunteer
  • Bereavement camp facilitator
  • Grief group facilitator
  • Coordinating or volunteering at a Thanatology Conference



No Minimum requirement

Maximum 15 hours


Online Recertification Process

  • To apply for recertification, you must first login to your ADEC Member or Non-Member Profile
  • Click on the gold button to access the Credentialing Applications platform
  • Select your  "Application Type" (first question on page 1), click on "Recertification Application"
  • From the dropdown box, select your credential type: CT or FT
  • Check the boxes to certify that you have met the eligibility requirements
  • Move your application to the Cart and submit your online payment
  • We randomly audit Recertification Applications. If your application is selected for audit, you will be instructed on the information and documents you will need to submit.
  • You will be notified of Approval/Denial within 4 weeks of submitting your recertification application or submission of audit materials.
  • If approved, a digital certificate with your new 3-year expiration date will be issued in January
  • If denied, no refunds will be given.





Recertification Fees for Both CT and FT

            ADEC Member Fee: $220 USD
 
            Non-Member Fee: $439 USD

  • Becoming an ADEC member requires a separate transaction before applying for recertification
  • Paying the higher fee as a Non-Member does not provide you with an ADEC membership
  • Non-Members who wish to become an ADEC member and enjoy all member benefits, Join Now

             

NOTE: ADEC memberships are good from January 1 through December 31. Fees are not pro-rated based on when you join. You can enjoy full member benefits through December 31st of this year, at which time your ADEC membership will expire.
