ADEC's Roots for Giving

Through the years ADEC has established specific funds to sustain ongoing, key initiatives. You can choose one of the following below, designating your gift to one of these deeply rooted causes. All contributions are tax-deductible and can be made securely through the website. Simply click on the fund's "Donate" button below its description.

ADEC's first special fund was set up in 1995, following a bequest from the estate of Ira Nerken. Since our 1996 conference in Pittsburgh, earnings from this fund have been used each year to cover the costs of an international keynote speaker at the Annual Conference.

We remember Ronald Keith Barrett, PhD., FT, Psychologist, Professor, Scholar, Author, Lecturer, Chair of the Department of Psychology, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, California; an active and dedicated member of ADEC and founder the People of Color Forum. (This group evolved into ADEC's current Diversity and Inclusion.) The Estate of Ronald Keith Barrett, PhD established this endowed fund to award "The Ronald Keith Barrett, PhD. Scholarship for Diversity and Multicultural Presentations. The mission is to support and increase opportunities for presenters of color and persons whose work and presentations on diversity and multicultural rituals, traditions and concerns brings awareness and sensitivity to end-of-life caregiving. Two nursing colleagues from Florida, Edie Stark and Shirley Scott were important in the founding the Women in Thanatology circle at ADEC. After their deaths, memorial gifts were received in Edie Stark's name and a bequest was received from Shirley Scott's estate. In 2018, the Board voted to combine these two gifts and establish funds to sponsor a conference scholarship awarded to one or more "New Professional" women. ADEC's Hannelore Wass Cross-Cultural Student Paper Award was established in Dr. Wass's memory in 2015. Its endowment earnings are used at the discretion of the Student Awards Committee to pay the conference student registration fee for the student winner(s) to attend the ADEC annual conference.

More Ways to Give

You can support Student Scholarships for our Annual Conference, paying attendance fees for selected thanatology students to participate. ADEC is expanding this program to bring more students to our conferences and ensure they gain what they need to be fully involved in our association. Support thanatology students with your donation!

You can provide Research Support for Board-sponsored research grants. For example, one research study evaluated the effectiveness of educating law enforcement officers about best practices in death notification. Grants to ADEC promote integration of theory and research findings to promote improvement in care of the dying and the bereaved.

Public Education advances ADEC's mission of death education to the public. When global and personal tragedies of death and bereavement occur, ADEC's members are often leading the way.  Your donation strengthens the public content of the website, provides training at the annual conference, and develops timely, accessible resources for ADEC's members and others when it is needed most.

Plan longer term giving to ADEC, like including the association as a beneficiary in your will. Planned Giving allows you to keep your values alive and active through the workings of the association after you’re gone. This allows you to make a substantial donation to ADEC now without depleting your day-to-day income or retirement assets. Learn more about making a Planned Gift.

Moving forward in today's post-pandemic world, your donation to ADEC's ensures that our day-to-day services for you and our thanatology impact throughout our world are grounded in wise stewardship of ADEC's resources, talents, and core purpose.

ADEC is 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Our money directly goes into ensuring excellence in the services we provide.
